Calabrian mustaccioli, also called mostaccioli or ’nzuddi, are traditional sweets made with honey and flour, known for varied human-like or geometric shapes decorated with coloured foil. Mainly from Soriano Calabro, they are a staple of regional fairs, festivals and Christmas celebrations.
TRADITIONAL RECIPE
Many local variants exist, some softer with eggs or almonds. The old, simple recipe uses very few ingredients and yields a firm texture that keeps well.
Ingredients: 550 g type 00 flour; 500 g wildflower or fig honey; 3 egg yolks; 8 g baking powder (half a sachet); grated orange zest as needed; a pinch of cinnamon or anise liqueur, optional.
